February Meeting: Sergio Harding

Please join us this Wednesday, February 20th, at 7:00 pm for our February WBC meeting. Our speaker will be Sergio Harding from DGIF. Sergio has worked as a Nongame Bird Conservation Biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) since 2005. In this capacity, he is responsible for coordinating with a variety of partner agencies, universities, and non-profits to implement bird conservation projects and strategies. His topic Wednesday night with center around conservation strategies for the Golden-winged Warbler.

It should be a very interesting and dynamic presentation. Please mark your calendars and join us at William and Mary’s Integrated Science Center, room 1127. Remember, parking in front of Phi Beta Kappa Hall is no longer available. However, your parking pass will allow you to use the Morton Hall lot as well as any spaces you see marked ‘Faculty and Staff’ on Landrum Drive. I’ve attached a parking pass for your convenience!

January Meeting: Bob Schamerhorn “Atlantic Coastal Birds”

Bob Schamerhorn will return to share his wonderful photographs in a talk entitled “Atlantic Coastal Birds.” The Atlantic Coastline contains a great diversity of bird species: Gulls,Terns, Skimmers, Sandpipers, Plovers, Herons, Egrets, Swans, Ducks, Geese, Mergansers, Grebes, Rails, and more. This wide variety of species, typical to the coast, will be discussed, intertwining beautiful photography with information about our favorite shorebirds, discussion of habitats, migration, and the challenges the species face. This program covers the coast from Maine to Florida and is a wonderful preview for our Chesapeake Bay boat trip on January 20th.

 

November Meeting: Fletcher Smith “Birding and Research Above the Arctic Circle”

NOTE THAT THIS IS THE SECOND WEDNESDAY, NOT THE USUAL THIRD. We will join forces with the Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists to hear research biologist Fletcher Smith speak. His talk, called “Birding and Research Above the Arctic Circle”, will be sharing with us information about the birds and animals encountered during each summer over the three years he lived in a field camp on the tundra on Bathurst Island in the Arctic Circle.

October Meeting: John Swaddle “Developing an ‘Acoustic Lighthouse’ to Reduce Birds’ Risk of Collision in Flight”

Dr. John Swaddle of William and Mary will be our speaker, talking about his grant to develop technology to reduce the toll wind turbines take on birds.  Entitled “Developing an ‘Acoustic Lighthouse’ to Reduce Birds’ Risk of Collision in Flight”, this will be a fascinating evening.

September Meeting: Dave Youker “Birding in Guatemala”

Please join us at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 19th, in the Integrated Science Center, room 1127, for a program given by our speaker, Dave Youker.  His topic is a fascinating one–Virginia Society of Ornithology (VSO) Birding in Guatemala.  Dave will be telling us about be the many wonderful birds seen throughout the various habitats of Guatemala. He’ll also be covering the great work being done by Community Cloud Forest Conservation (CCFC) in the areas of conservation and education that are leading to improved societal changes within the country. Please come join us for a fascinating and interesting evening.
