We’ll convene at the Fire Circle between 1:00 – 3:00 pm. We hope to have a fire going in the circle in case it’s a chilly day. Relax and visit with new and old friends on the benches while you warm your hands or venture out around the park to find our wintering birds. The address for New Quarter Park is 1000 Lakeshead Drive, Williamsburg. You can find directions to the park on its website at https://www.yorkcounty.gov/1816/New-Quarter-Park. The Park Brochure on the website shows the path from the parking lot to the Fire Circle. Come as you are! Bring visiting family, friends, and children; come early, stay late, or just drop by. Remember, every bird is a year bird on New Year’s Day! I look forward to welcoming you to celebrate the start of 2023.

This will be a Zoom-only meeting about shorebirds. If you are a WBC member, you should have the email with the link to the Zoom meeting, which will be at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18. Join us on January 18, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom for Pete Myers’ presentation, “Bird Bedlam on the Beach.” Pete is a biologist, author, and photographer living near White Hall, VA. He has photographed birds for over four decades and spent thousands of hours on the beaches of northern California, including on Point Reyes. From Pete: “[My] images reveal details of bird bedlam on sandy beaches few casual observers will ever see. Georgia O’Keefe taught us not just to look, but to see the beauty of nature in its intimate details. She worked with subjects, often flowers, that at best move very slowly, but mostly not at all. Birds, in contrast, move rapidly, often faster than our eyes can track. With modern photographic equipment, I try to emulate O’Keefe: to capture intimate moments in birds’ lives on sandy beaches—feeding, fighting, flying, and dying—and with these images share those moments with you. Each one has a rich story behind it.”

On Saturday, January 21, Rose Ryan will lead our group at the Henricus Park/Dutch Gap Conservation Area outside Richmond. We’ll meet in the parking lot for Henricus Park at 9 a.m. The address, for Google Maps, is 251 Henricus Park Road, Chester, VA 23836 . In previous years, this site has provided good views of many wintering ducks, plus an occasional rarity like a Common Gallinule. We are not arranging car pools for this field trip. There’s plenty of parking at the park. Let’s hope for good weather! 18:00 -20:00 01/21/2023 1000 Lakeshead Dr., Williamsburg, Va
The owl prowl held at New Quarter Park went well! We had around 20 people in attendance. It was a beautiful clear, crisp winter evening with the stars shining brightly! Unfortunately, we did not hear or see any owls. We did here tundra swans calling out on Queens Creek and the York River. We also woke up a sleeping cardinal who was not very happy to be awakened by us! We did not see or hear any foxes, coyotes, raccoons or deer. It was a quiet night in the park. Despite not finding any owls, everyone seemed to enjoy the nighttime stroll in the park.

We had a great turn out for our monthly bird walk at New Quarter Park! We had seventeen people come out and we saw 29 species of birds. We saw two Brown Pelicans on the poles in Queens Creek by the marina. That is a first for me at New Quarter Park! Many of our woodpeckers made a showing this morning, including a Red Headed Woodpecker and quite a few Red Bellied Woodpeckers. We saw some of our winter visitors such as Yellow Rumped Warblers, Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers and a Hermit Thrush. There also was a large group of Turkey and Black Vultures circling around. It was a beautiful, but chilly winter morning for the walk. Scott Hemler Link to eBird list
