Our annual Williamsburg Spring Bird Count will be Sunday, May 6, 2018. We conduct the Spring Bird Count (SBC) within the same 15-mile diameter count circle that we use for the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. The count data, however, is not compiled by the Audubon Society. Instead, we record the SBC results into a database that we maintain ourselves as part of the Williamsburg Bird Club’s work to monitor our local populations throughout the year. Our club conducted it’s first SBC on May 6, 1978.
Please consider participating, either as a feeder watcher or in the field. If you enjoyed feeder-watching for last year’s Christmas Bird Count, then this is a great opportunity to do it again. Simply record your species counts at your feeders and then send them to your sector leader like you did for the CBC. If you sent your feeder counts to Jim Corliss for last year’s CBC, then you can simply do that again for the SBC. If you’re unsure who your sector leader is or if you’re new to feeder-watching for our bird counts, then please contact me with questions.
If you’ve previously participated in the field and would like to do it again, then please contact the sector leader with whom you worked last time. You can also contact Jim for assistance getting hooked up with a field team. The more eyes we have in the field the more birds we’ll spot, so please don’t hesitate to get involved.
