SUMMARY:Field Trip to Chippokes State Park
DESCRIPTION:The Williamsburg Bird Club’s field trip to Chippokes State Park is next Saturday\, May 16.  Eli Kenyon will lead our group through the varied habitats of the park.  Please get in line for the ferry across the James River by 7:10 a.m. so that we all can catch the 7:20 a.m. departure.  For those arriving from Southside\, we’ll meet at the Visitors Center at 8 a.m.  The address is 695 Chippokes Park Road\, Surry\, VA 23883.  It’s less than 10 minutes from the Scotland ferry terminal. \nThere haven’t been any recent thorough checklists from the park.  But the summer residents – vireos\, flycatchers\, several warblers\, tanagers\, etc. – should have arrived.  On past field trips to the park\, we have seen Eastern Meadowlark\, Yellow-throated Warbler\, Prothonotary Warbler\, Savannah Sparrow\, and even Grasshopper Sparrow. \nFor those who get hungry while birding\, we’ll leave the park by 11:30 a.m. and reconvene at Surry Seafood for a nice lunch. \nIf you have a state park pass\, bring that.  The entry fee for vehicles without a state park pass is $7.  Also\, if people want to consolidate cars\, the parking lot at Historic Jamestown (left off Route 31 just before the ferry) is a good place to gather.

SUMMARY:Field Trip to the Eastern Shore
DESCRIPTION:Our club’s annual field trip to the Eastern Shore will be in September this year\, one month earlier than we’ve traveled there in previous years. This field trip frequently results in the highest species count of all our field trips due to the time of year and the wide diversity of habitat. In 2025\, the group identified 70 species. \nOn Saturday\, September 19\, we’ll meet at the Visitor’s Center of the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge (ESVNWR) at 8:00 a.m. Deborah Humphries will lead us around the Visitor’s Center as well as the trail behind it\, then move to three other stops: Ramp Road\, also within ESVNWR; the Hawk Watch at Kiptopeke State Park; and the Edward Brinkley Nature Preserve. We are planning to leave Ramp Road no later than 10:15 a.m. so that we have plenty of time at the Hawk Watch. \nWe also want to work in lunch at Cape Charles Brewing Company after a morning of birding. If we leave Kiptopeke a little late\, some may decide to go to the Edward Brinkley Preserve after lunch. In any event\, bring a snack or two and plenty of water! If you are interested in carpooling\, or you are willing to drive others\, please let me know. The carpool meeting spot is the Colony Square Shopping Center on Jamestown Road. Carpoolers should plan to depart by 6:30 a.m. I expect we’ll return to Williamsburg around 4 p.m. If you have a state park pass\, please bring it. Admission for cars without an annual pass is $7. \nAgain this year\, Baxter Beamer is monitoring the morning flight at Sunset Beach. Members are invited to view the morning flight. You’ll need to arrive at the site between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. I understand another group will be observing the morning flight that day\, so Mr. Beamer may be busy.\nHere are Google Maps addresses for the sites we’ll visit:\n• Visitor’s Center\, ESVNWR—32205 Seaside Road\, Cape Charles\, VA 23310\n• Kiptopeke State Park—3540 Kiptopeke Drive\, Cape Charles\, VA 23310\n• Edward S. Brinkley Nature Preserve—20199 Seaside Road\, Cape Charles\, VA 23310\n• Cape Charles Brewing Company—2198 Stone Road\, Cape Charles\, VA 23310\n• Sunset Beach Morning Flight—End of Wise Point Lane (across Rt. 13 from Seaside Road entrance to ESVNWR).

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Brickyard Landing October 17
DESCRIPTION:For the club’s October field trip\, we’ll visit two parks in western James City County which we haven’t birded at previously as a club.  We’ll start at Brickyard Landing\, a new park in the James City County system\, and one which several bird club members have volunteered at.  The park has a native plant section\, and frontage on the Chickahominy River.  We’ll meet there at 8 a.m.  The park address is listed at the end of this article. \nWe’ll then stop at Little Creek Reservoir Park\, just a few minutes away.  This park has viewing access to the reservoir\, along with a ½ mile trail.  It may be too early to see wintering ducks\, but I expect the White-throated Sparrows and the Yellow-rumped Warblers should be there in force by then. \nBrickyard Landing:  990 Brickyard Rd\, Toano\, VA 23168 \nLittle Creek Reservoir Park:  180 Lakeview Drive\, Toano\, VA 23168
