The Williamsburg Bird Club and New Quarter Park co-sponsor bird walks at New Quarter Park twice a month — the second and fourth Saturdays. The second Saturdays we meet at 8 a.m; the fourth Saturdays we meet at 7 a.m. Meet in the parking lot near the park office.
In the event of inclement weather, the trip leader generally shows up at the meeting site and decide at that point among those who show up what to do. If it’s pouring with no let up forecast, the trip is typically canceled. Sometimes the group votes to press on.
Participants can stay as long as they’d like. Generally, the leader will walk about two hours or so, but participants can peel off as they like.
After the walk, a list of birds we observe is kept and entered into eBird.
New Quarter Park is a 545 acre preserve of mature woodlands and open meadows. The park sits on a bluff of fossil shells and is surrounded by creeks and marsh plains.
New Quarter Park is located near Queens Lake at 1000 Lakeshead Drive. Take Route 143 East (toward Newport News) to Penniman Rd. Turn left onto Penniman, then left onto Hubbard Lane. Follow Hubbard Lane for about one mile. After Colonial Parkway overpass, turn right on Lakeshead and follow to the park. Call 890-3513 if you need more directions.
