  • Efforts to manage Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel bird colony paying off

From the September 11, 2011 Daily Press:

"It used to be that motorists traveling through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel frequently came in perilous contact with errant sea birds or their already-smashed carcasses littering the highway.

"The birds are still there, and they continue to succumb to untimely deaths, but not nearly as much as before, according to a College of William and Mary biology professor who has been something of a caretaker of the HRBT's protected sea bird colony for more than 20 years.

"Ruth Beck says efforts to cull some of the more problematic birds and provide better security measures for the rest are paying off."
